  1. My doctor diagnosed me with Capsulitis this week, and has recommended that I see a Podiatrist to have some orthotics prescribed. I'm not too excited about paying $400-$600 for this. What would you recommend?

  2. I have the same thing. It is very painful. Do you have insurance? If so, you need to get a orthopedic boot. I have t wear mine for 6 weeks (yikes!) but it will help. Have you had injections?

  3. Your doctor canot say you need an othotic, the podiatrist will diagnose what you have, it may be a bimechanical cause or something else.

  4. My podiatrist diagnosed it as capsulitis, but his orthotic prescription was over $500!!! I ended up ordering a pair from these guys (they charged $150+shipping at the time), and their orthotics did the trick just fine. I haven't had any pain since I've been wearing them. I see they dropped their prices now... economy must be hitting everyone!

  5. There are a lot of shoe stores that make custom orthotics for less than $300 (hopefully using the new computer imaging technology - you stand on this platform and it takes a "picture" of your foot. Stay away from the old-fashioned kind where they put plaster on you and make a paper-mache-like mold of your feet. Also there are non-custom orthotics that you can buy (with a metarsal pad and extra cushioning on the bottom of the foot) for around $69. Shop around on the internet as well as local shoe shops and walking stores, as they are called.

    1. But I love mine! They have a lifetime of 10 years and is been 11 years so far. I paid $250 to replace one of them. It was worth it. Also if you have Medicaid it can get covered initially, mine did!

  7. I have the condition capsulitis in my second toe. My podiatrist showed me how to strap it but to no avail. She told me to return for an orthotic for my shoes. But I live in a very hot climate and it's impossible to wear anything other than open shoes or sandles. This is adding to the problem. Can anyone suggest anything else.

  10. I have capsulitis of the second toe, and seem to be getting great relief with a shiatsu style foot massager. Along with icing and meds. I gently massage my foot while watching tv, and start getting relief in about 20 minutes; I have to reming myself my foot is injured so I don't press to hard on the massager. After starting this, I over worked my foot one day and a lot of pain came back, but not nearly as much as before. I havn't read anything about massage on the blogs yet. I have a homedics shiatsu foor massager, NOT pushing it, any massage might do. try it!

  11. As a physical therapist, I can tell you that custom orthotics are a waster of money. You can get them in the store or check out superfeet.com

  12. To the physical therapist, the orthotics are not always a waste of time. I suffered with foot problems--some nearly crippling me--and tried every drugstore device on the market. I was finally fit for orthotics, and within a short period of time, I could finally walk, pain free. That said, I did develop Baker's cyst ten years later and a therapist got me through that episode without medication. Now I've developed celulitis of the upper foot due to unusually high arches. When the podiatrist recommended either custom orthotics or over-the-counter aids, I didn't hesitate in saying, 'Let's cut to the chase and have me fitted today.' Why go through all I went through before--trying useless products--when I know the great results I had a decade ago.
